Promoting Healthy Students Initiative Creates Wellness Corridor for Customs & Border Protection
Santa Cruz County, Arizona - The Santa Cruz County Superintendent’s Office in collaboration with Customs Border Protection (CBP) created a wellness corridor for CBP staff in the Deconcini Round-Room located at the Nogales/Arizona border.
CBP provides regular Basic Resiliency Skills Courses to staff to promote health and wellness. During September, which is also Health Awareness Month across the United States, CBP staff was taught to incorporate the use of resilience skills through art using the analogy of a saguaro.
Superintendent Alfredo I. Velasquez through his Promoting Healthy Students Initiative program provided the brief training exercise to staff. In addition, a wellness corridor of art was decorated using youth artwork created by Santa Cruz County students who took part in wellness and arts camps over the summer.
The corridor has already had a positive impact on the staff. “Thank you for the partnership opportunity to build a healthy workforce,” wrote Watch Commander Vincent D. Luna in an email to PHSI’s Grant Director, Teresa Sprigg. Luna said that the port had received “immediate feedback for the positivity created by the displays.”
