RABIES ALERT INFORMATION

skunk rabies
WHAT IS RABIES?
Rabies is a viral illness transmitted by the saliva of the infected animal through bites, scratches and contact with mucus membranes to another. It is invariably fatal after symptoms appear. Since the rabies virus affects the nervous system, the symptoms most often noted are changes in behavior. Animals such as skunks, that are normally nocturnal and afraid of humans, often become fearless and appear in the daytime near human habitation. Other manifestations of the illness include an increased tendency of the rabid animal to bite and / or scratch, plus disorientation and aggressiveness.
